    Atra paspalum

    Species: Atra paspalum
    Scientific Name: Paspalum atratum
    Cultivars:Suerte
    Growth Habit:Erect bunch grass 5-7 feet tall. Leaf is wide, with rough margins and purple sheaths at base of plant. Flower is 6-8 inches long composed of 10-13 racemes.
    Life Cycle:Perennial. Flowering period in Florida is October
    Origin:Brazil - original material collected in Mato Grosso
    Production Season:
  • April-October.
  • Productive through November in Southeast.
  • Nutritive Value:Varies depending on management. Usually, low to medium crude protein, low to medium digestibility.

    Soil:Wet, moderately to poorly drained
    pH:5.5 to 6.0
    Rainfall:Requires moisture, not recommended for dry sites
    Temperature:Warm-season. (grows south of Jay, FL)

    Notes

  • Adapted to poor soils.
  • Leaves are very frost sensitive.
  • Short grazing season (approx. 170 days when grazed at 2.5 yearling/acre).
  • Good seedling vigor, but seedlings are killed by 2,4-D.
  • Tolerates close grazing.
  • Armyworms and mole crickets can be a problem.
