  • Hybrids: Tifton 85, Tifton 44, Jiggs, Russell, Coastal, Florakirk (Callie Hybrid), Alicia (not recommended for livestock, only high traffic areas).
  • Seeded types: Numerous; currently under evaluation in Florida are varieties Cheyenne, Mohawk, and Wrangler which are cold tolerant, and blends: Texas Tough, Sungrazer, Riata, and Stampede.
  • Growth Habit:Prostrate or decumbent growth. 1-2 feet tall
    Life Cycle:Perennial, warm-season
    Origin:Africa
    Production Season:May to October
    Nutritive Value:Varies depending on management and variety. Usually, low to medium crude protein, low to medium digestibility. T-85 hybrid medium to high crude protein and digestibility

    Management

    Planting Date:March (irrigated); June to August (rainfed)
    Planting Depth:1/4 - 3/4 inch (seed)
    2-3 inches (vegetative material; sprigs and tops)
    Seeding Rate:10 to 15 lb/acre; 20 lb/acre for coated seeds.
    Sprig planting rates are 30 to 40 bushels/acre, planted at a depth of 2-3 inches. If using tops, rate is 1200 lb/acre
    Seed Cost:Mohawk ($3.8/lb, $38 to 57/acre); Wrangler ($4.5/lb, $67.5 to 90/acre). Texas Tough ($7.5/lb, $75 to 120/acre)

  • Second most planted warm-season perennial improved grass.
  • Does not do well on poorly drained soils
  • Affected by fall armyworm.
  • Grown extensively in the uplands, from Orlando north.
