    Scientific Name: Schizachyrium rhizomatum
    Cultivars:
    Growth Habit:2-5 feet tall. Membranous ligule. Rounded, slightly keeled sheaths. Sheaths and blades glabrous. Short, slender rhizomes. Strongly curved, 1-4 inch long racemes. Colonies have a characteristic bluish color.

    Origin:Native to Florida
    Production Season:Warm season (January-September). Seedheads formed in September.

    Notes

  • Primarily south of Sarasota-Martin County, in sites that have marl and limerock such as Cabbage Palm and Everglades Flatwoods, and Scrub Cypress ranges.
  • Important specie in native range. Highly palatable and readily grazed.
  • Deferred grazing during growth season allows plants to regain vigor and spread.
