UF/IFAS Agronomy Forage and Turfgrass Graduate Students Are “Outstanding in Their Fields” at Annual CSSA Meetings

Six graduate students in the Agronomy Department at UF/IFAS dominated the awards presentations in their respective divisions at the annual Crop Science Society of America (CSSA) meetings held in Baltimore, MD November 3 to 7, 2018.  The CSSA has 9 different divisions based on subject matter and various science disciplines.

Division C-5, Turfgrass Science, held graduate student poster competitions on Monday and Tuesday afternoon.  Two UF/IFAS Agronomy students presented outstanding posters and received the following recognition:

Jamie Buhlman

Jamie Buhlman, 1stPlace out of 10 posters in the Turf Physiology, Molecular Biology, and Genetics Poster session.

Katie Cox

Katie Cox, 3rdPlace out of 18 posters in the Turfgrass Management and Ecology Poster session.

Katie Cox received the prestigious 2018 Chris Stiegler Turf Science Student Travel Award and Fellowship

The Supervisory Professor for both students is Dr. Kevin Kenworthy.

David Jaramillo, Liza Garcia, Lilane Severino da Silva, Erick Santos

Division C-6, Forage and Grazinglands, held the Robert F. Barnes PhD Oral presentation contest on Monday morning. UF/IFAS Agronomy graduate students swept the top 4 awards among the 10 PhD student presentations in this session as follows:

David Jaramillo, 1stplace, Supervisory Professor – Jose Dubeux

Lilane Severino da Silva, 2ndplace, Supervisory Professor – Lynn Sollenberger

Liza Garcia, 3rdplace, 3rdplace, Supervisory Professor – Jose Dubeux

Erick Santos, 4thplace, Supervisory Professor – Jose Dubeux

These recognitions just confirm what we as faculty already knew – that we have some of the top graduate students in the nation in our programs and they truly are “Outstanding in Their Fields.”
