University of Florida

Extension Program

Agronomic extension is characterized by several features, some of them quite unique, that contribute significantly to its mission in Florida:

  • integration of specialists in academic departments
  • joint appointments with research
  • coverage of the state and responsiveness to clientele needs

Agronomists with extension appointments assimilate and disseminate information on the production of field and forage crops and control of terrestrial and aquatic weeds. A close working relationship is maintained between State Extension Specialists and county extension personnel. Increased emphasis is being placed on producer on-farm demonstration/research activities in which both state and county personnel cooperate. Because of Florida's unique geographical location and climate, much of the technology employed by extension in the state must be generated here; however, specialists cooperate across state lines where feasible. More emphasis is being placed on electronic transfer of information to the county level and the development of user-friendly computer programs to assist both county extension personnel and producers in developing production strategies. Dissemination of information will remain the major effort of the extension agronomists, located on campus and at research centers.
