Research Focus
Forage breeding/genetics and management of plant species adapted to northern Florida. The research emphasizes breeding and selection of adapted plant species which target late fall and early winter forage production. The program is part of an interdisciplinary team designed to support the cattle industry in the Tri-State region.
Research will primarily focus on:
- Photoperiod response of tropical forage grass species (Paspalum and Cynodon)
- Evaluation and genetic improvement of perennial summer forage grasses
- Reseeding qualities for late fall/early winter forage production in annual legumes and grasses
- Forage productivity and nutritional quality of fall season grazing systems
Extension Focus
Develop extension programs relating to forage production and management to meet the needs of the livestock industry in North Florida. Conduct forage evaluations, extension demonstrations and field days to benefit the county extension personnel and general public. Develop extension publications on relevant forage research and make other applicable information available to producers.
