Dr. Gopal Kakani

Professor 

Crop Physiology & Modeling

Dr. Gopal Kakani serves as the Professor and Chair of the Agronomy Department. He obtained his B.S. in Agriculture and M.S. in Agronomy from India, and Ph.D. in Crop Physiology and Modeling from the University of Reading, UK.  His research experience spans continents with expertise in agronomy, crop physiology, remote sensing and crop modeling. He has generated research funding over $15 million from agencies including DOE, NSF, USDA, SunGrant and Industry partners. Dr. Kakani takes keen interest in training next generation agriculture scientists. He served as major advisor for 15 graduate students and on committees of more than 20 graduate students, and trained more than 100 undergraduate students both domestic and international. He has received national and international recognition for his research. He is the 2020-21 recipient of the Fulbright-Kalam Climate Award and the 2020 Outstanding Agricultural Scientist by Association of Agricultural Scientists of Indian Origin (AASIO).

Dr. Kakani is a 2020 graduate of the LEAD 21 Class 15 and trained to lead the Land Grant System beyond 2020. Nationally, Gopal served as the Vice-Leader and Leader of Bioenergy Systems Community of American Society of Agronomy and Vice-President and President of Association of Agricultural Scientists of Indian Origin.
