Dr. James Estrada

Instructional Assistant Professor, Plant Science & Graduate Training Skills

Program Areas

Dr. Estrada scientific background is quite diverse, with BS degrees in Biology and Environmental Science (Bowling Green State University), a MA degree in Biology/Marine Biology (Boston University) and a Ph.D. in Agronomy (University of Florida). He has focused primarily on teaching during his career. His teaching focuses on interdisciplinary training in agricultural science education. Additionally, his duties as Director of Agroecology include the implementation of professional skills training programs (Accelerate to Industry, Project Teams) for graduate students and post-docs. These programs link students with key UF corporate stakeholders and better prepare students to enter an increasingly competitive workforce.

  • Education

My scientific background is quite diverse, with BS degrees in Biology and Environmental Science (Bowling Green State University), a MA degree in Biology/Marine Biology (Boston University) and a Ph.D. in Agronomy (University of Florida).

  • Teaching

Crop Physiology (AGR 5444/4512) Physiological, ecological, and environmental responses that impact growth, development, and yield formation of cultivated crops. Offered spring term

    Project Team Research (ALS 6031)

Living and Eating on Earth (IDS 2935)

    Professional Communication (AGR 6932)

  • Research

    Departmental Research Areas:

    • Plant Science
    • Graduate Training Skills

    Research Focus:

My research interests lie primarily in the application of stable isotope analysis (SIA) to plant community dynamics, physiology, invasion mechanisms and impacts. I also have extensive experience in utilizing SIA to investigate food web structure and trophic dynamics in marine ecosystems.

  • Professional Experience

I focus on interdisciplinary training in agricultural science education. For general education courses, this entails introducing core scientific topics to students from a wide array of majors, many of whom find science courses intimidating. For agriculture majors, this involves incorporating aspects of social sciences, ecology, human health, and politics into our course discussions as a means of helping students connect class materials to their daily lives. Additionally, my duties as Director of Agroecology include the implementation of professional skills training programs (Accelerate to Industry, Project Teams) for graduate students and post-docs. These programs link students with key UF corporate stakeholders and better prepare students to enter an increasingly competitive workforce. I currently teach Crop Physiology (AGR 5444/4512), Project Team Research (ALS 6031), Living and Eating on Earth (IDS 2935), and Professional Communication (AGR 6932).
