Dr. Kara Riggs

Instructional Assistant Professor, Plant Science & Genetics Teaching

Program Areas

Dr. Riggs is responsible for overseeing the Student Learning Outcomes assessment and reporting for M.S. and Ph.D. Agronomy graduate students in the Agroecology concentration. Dr. Riggs teaches courses that focus on genetics and plant science. Her research background includes plant pathogenic zoospore chemotaxis, root growth maintenance under water stress, and international agricultural development. In 2018 she was recognized with the Young Professional Award by the Association for International Agriculture and Rural Development (AIARD). Before joining UF, Dr. Riggs served as Director of Urban Agriculture and Renewable Resources at Dallas College. Dr. Riggs holds a B.Sc. in Agriculture from The Ohio State University and a Ph.D. in Plant, Insect, and Microbial Sciences from the University of Missouri-Columbia.

  • Teaching

    • AGR3303: Genetics will present a comprehensive coverage of the principles, theory and applications of genetics. Topics include the chemical nature and structure of genetic material, gene expression and regulation, cell division, chromosome number and structure variation, principles of inheritance, molecular genetic techniques, and basic concepts in population and quantitative genetics.
    • PLS 3004C Principles of Plant Science: Introduces the principles and practices of plant production systems. An overview of plant evolution, anatomy, physiology, improvement, pest, water and nutrient management as applied to a variety of plant production systems.
